Design Fundamentals Project: Hierarchy Poster

Prior to the final project, students designed a hybrid letterform (Module 01), created a 5-panel sequence of the letter interacting with an object, crafted a 3-dimensional letterform, and paired with a classmate to digitally film both glyphs interacting.

Module 05:
In the final module, I had students translate their 3D letterforms and time-based videos back into a 2D medium. Posters were made from a mix of colored paper and photocopies. I asked students to visually translate their oppositional pairings that they established in earlier projects. (Oppositional pairings included inside/outside, dense/airy and fast/slow.)

I had students select a word to describe their letterform and type-set it to enhance the word's meaning. The poster objective was to communicate a hierarchical relationship between letterform, word and oppositional pair. Students explored hierarchy through the use of color, position and scale.

The Course syllabus (pdf) was developed with Professor Will Temple.
