Design thinking, visual articulation and a love for learning guide my actions as a graphic and interactive designer, a design educator, a cross disciplinarian, and a digital conceptualist. This is a selection of my projects, essays and experiences.

High School Design Camp
At NCSU's Summer High School Design Camp rising juniors and seniors rotate through five design modules for a taste of each design discipline over the course of one week. The graphic design project must be completed in a single day without computers (including instruction, production and critique time).
Project:
For this typography project I ask students to think about the meaning and form of words and letters. Each student receives a 7-letter word printed on colored paper (in a variety of typefaces). Word choices included: Comfort, Extreme, Machine, Natural, Playing, and Privacy. Students cut each letterform in half, discarding the top. The challenge is to re-complete each letterform by replacing the "missing" half with imagery. Students search magazines to find images with formal similarities to their missing letterforms, in both shape and typographic personality. Beyond a formal match I ask students to comment upon the meaning of the word through thematic choices (e.g. US contains politically related images). The photocopier is used to reduce or enlarge the images as needed. The final product is an accordion fold book.
