Dumpster Diver's Material Language System

This is a hypothetical visual lexicon and syntax designed for a sub-culture of "Dumpster Divers". I collaborated with a classmate on this project. Our initial research determined that this sub-culture communicates (via bragging, trading and warnings) in coded terms. Since Dumpster Divers focus upon scavenging for a variety of quality, but tossed-out material goods, we deemed a language constructed from their material world as appropriate. "Words" are created out of any material that people find while diving. "Statements" are collages of the found objects.

A starter dictionary (containing 50 example "words") is provided to the community, but divers are encouraged to develop their own symbols and from any material they choose. This organic approach allows niche expressions and personalities to emerge within a group. People share the messages using a camera-cell phone. Divers simply compose collages on location, snap a picture and send via cell phone. The narrative "grid" displayed on the phone interface (composed of character, action, subject and setting quadrants) helps fellow divers both compose and decode the short statements.
